Guest of Honor: In Celebration of Pride, Love, and Being Who We Are with Jack Lam

On that last Thursday in June, the month of Pride, we are joined in conversation with Jack Lam. Jack is a colleague of mine, friend, and proud member of the LGBTQ community.

Today, we are honoring the history of Pride month by recognizing what so many have done to fight for the world we live in today, and what so many are still fighting for. We unpack the messages that sometimes all too easily pass us by that have a deep impact on our connection and expression of ourselves. And we discuss how we can go about honoring all of this, as we call the people around us forward.

In a world that has so many dark shadows right now, this conversation touched my heart. Through Jack's words, you can feel and honor the deep sadness that still exists in our world. And at the same time, you can feel the bright joy that comes when we create space for everyone to truly express and live who they are.

I recognize that each person may have a different journey in engaging with activism, knowledge, and connection, and perhaps you may all be at different points in how you engage with the LGBTQ Community. Today, no matter where you are in engaging with the LGBTQ community, I invite you to pause, open your heart, and hear. Because another human being is sharing his beautiful story today, and there are so many insights and connection to be gained by showing up for another's story. I can't wait to share Jack's light with all of you.

Recipe: Jack shared one of my new favorite recipes from his home country of Malaysia! Today we are popping in some toast and having it with Kaya, a malaysian coconut custard spread! Click the link for an amazing recipe from Bee at Rasa Malaysia.

It keeps in the fridge for a while and is the perfect mix of sweet, smooth, and that pop of bliss only coconut can bring. We explore in our conversation how the extra Kaya could be used perhaps in a rice dish or beyond! If you try it, let us know! As promised, here is the NYT Cooking recipe for coconut rice by Genevieve Ko I followed from one of our Sunday papers and loved.

Take Home Tip:

Jack recommends sitting with yourself, or having a conversation with someone close to you. Choose a time in your life as your younger self. Reflect on what you thought then, and compare that to what you know and who you are now. As Jack says, it can ignite the recognition of “possibility for growth and learning.”

When we can have hope and engagement with how much we still have to learn, grow, and change, we can begin to further imagine a world that continues to change for the good. One filled with so much more love. And then we can get to work. Here’s to today, and here’s to tomorrow.
