Recipe: Lavender Shaken Espresso

Lavender and coffee- maybe two of my favorite things. I found myself with extra lavender simple syrup (for an extra special project I’m working on), and an iced latte was calling my name. I was originally inspired by Liv B’s Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso, and opted for this lavender twist.

Coffee also happens to be an excellent way to practice mindfulness in our day to day. Rather than multi-task while it brews, pause and breathe. Hear the first drops enter the cup, smell, as the warmth of fresh brewed coffee fills your home. See the color change and the crema form on the top of your glass. Finally, both hands cupped around your glass, taste that beautiful cup.

In this recipe, I love how the lavender increases the impact coffee can have on our day. A scent known for its calming effects fills your home in the cooking process, and adds another sensory experience as you taste it in your drink.

Finally, noticing little ways we show up for our bodies can be a moment of connection. In this case, I opt for oat milk as that’s what tastes best and feels best to me.

I hope you’ll enjoy this fresh spring/summer drink, and can practice a few moments of calm in the process!

Lavender Shaken Espresso

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tablespoon dried lavender buds

  • 1/2 Cup turbinado sugar

  • 1/2 Cup cane sugar (these are the sugars I prefer, but you can certainly make simple syrup with whatever you have at home!)

  • 1/2 Cup water

  • Double shot of espresso

  • Oat Milk (or your choice of milk)

  • Ice

Steps:

  1. Heat a small sauce pan over medium heat. Add the lavender buds, and immediately remove from heat, stirring. The heat helps to release their flavor.

  2. Add the turbinado, can sugar, and water to the pot with the lavender. Return to heat over a simmer, and cook, stirring occasionally until a syrup like consistency forms. Let cool before using. (can be stored in the fridge for keeping).

  3. Brew your espresso, following the mindfulness steps in the process listed above. Set aside.

  4. If you’d like to have that perfect, Sonic like slushed ice for your latte, and you don’t have the special ice machine, I put mine in the blender for a few seconds. Add the desired amount to your drinking glass.

  5. Fill your shaker with ice cubes. Add 1 1/2 Tablespoons (or desired amount) of the lavender syrup, and espresso to the shaker.

  6. Shake until you notice the shaker become chilled, and a foam forms.

  7. Pour into serving glass, (avoiding the larger ice chunks), and top with desired amount of milk to add a creamy finish.

  8. Enjoy!
