Guest of Honor: Life Design with Katrina

I started this podcast and website to connect with others, share information, and gather around this virtual table to have really important conversations about mental health and wellness. Katrina and I connected at the very beginning of Baking Bread, and today on the podcast, we actually get to talk for the very first time. And beyond how incredible it is to see a true connection formed from this platform, our discussion today has suck with me since recording.

Katrina is a certified Life Design coach, and today she’s walking us through the key components of this ever impactful method, and how we can get started in our own life too.

This conversation seemed to appear at a time in my life when I was really needing to hear it. Personally, I’ve been feeling a lot of worry, anticipation, and anxiety over next steps in life. My birthday is around the corner, graduation in May will be here so soon, and that means some really big life decisions and maybe even “entering a new chapter in life”. How do we know when we are on the right path? How do we choose between two options, like where to live, that both feel great but for different reasons? While I can sit here and type it and logically think that we would simply make a plan, show up, do our best, and see what happens, it’s most certainly not that easy. And I’ve been feeling it.

Enter this conversation with Katrina. We walk through that yes, our life has many different possibilities, choices, and paths that we could/can take. AND, there are ways that we can brainstorm, try, and choose in a way that best is in alignment with our values, needs, and hopes for life too.

I’ve already purchased the book, have read about it online and watched the TED Talk, and can absolutely see how this is a great tool to use on my own, as well as designing life with Will. Katrina also shared a link to this worksheet map to explore your engagement, strengths, and where to begin, and I’m super excited to check it out.

I look forward to applying this skill in my own life, and learning more what it looks like in the therapy room too. It is universal that we all are making decisions, navigating life, and choosing our path. And I think it’s really cool that we can have the option to show up, get creative, and design a life that walks with us and our values in mind too.

Uncle Nearest Whiskey

Over cocktails, Katrina shared the incredible story of Uncle Nearest Whiskey. Watch this video to learn more about the first African-American distiller who taught Jack Daniels the craft. Then review the history here, and be sure to grab a bottle yourself!

Take Home Tip:

Katrina recommends getting in touch with how you’re feeling throughout your week. This helps us identify the things that give us a lot of energy, fill us up, and make us feel good. It also helps us identify some of those things that drain us too. By understanding the many different things that are a part of our week and how it affects us, it gives us insight into how our actions are impacting our overall life. With this knowledge, it’s also a great way to reflect further on how we can “get more out of life and not shove more into life” as Katrina says.
