Guest of Honor: Community in 2020 with Benjy of Johnny's Gold Brick

2020 has been quite the year. In times of difficulty, much like what we have lived through, or even in times of joy, we often turn to community. Today we are joined by Benjy, the owner of Johnny's Goldbrick. This bar here in Houston is the definition of community, that warm place where all are welcome. Pulling up a chair, talking to the person next to you, and enjoying yourself over a great cocktail is encouraged.

In today's episode, we unpack what it means to create a community like Johnny's. And we also explore what it feels like when our place of community is taken away, or looks different. In a time when community means so much, Benjy and I explore how we can still create that connection even when it might not look the same way.

I encourage you to grab a daiquiri, and if you're lucky enough to live near Johnny's, go grab a to-go order or visit them in person. We can't wait to have you join us in this virtual chat at the bar. Be sure to follow along on Instagram too!

On the Table:

We’re sharing Benjy’s go-to drink: the daiquiri. Johnny’s has an amazing list of the staples and classics, and a rotating menu where bartender contributes one drink per month. From this classic to one of their monthly cocktails, you can’t go wrong. Grab one to-go, or visit them in the Heights! Looking to make one yourself? Listen to the episode to get some specific tips from Benjy.

Take Home Tip:

Benjy wants to make sure you’re using fresh lime juice in your cocktails at home! Beyond that, please consider how you can support your local businesses right now, like those in the food and beverage industry. And while you’re there, from coffee to a cocktail, or dinner to go, consider how you can bring an extra amount of kindness and patience to the establishment. While our communities may look a bit different right now, the ways we can all support one another and those who are working so hard to provide bright spaces is so very important.

Thank you so much for listening, supporting, and showing up in your local communities. Here’s to creating more moments of connection over a great drink.
